Afghan community leaders 2024-25
- The Afghan community leaders programme will enable you develop self-awareness and skills to support others to grow and thrive in you community. The programme will explore ways to effectively represent your community and engage effectively with local stakeholders – supporting the integration of Afghan communities in Scotland.
During this programme, you will:
- Access a supportive space to connect with peers
- Develop the tools to step up as key leaders within your community
- Equip yourself with practical skills to help you understand yourself better; lead, motivate and inspire others
- Consider if you could take a more strategic approach to lead in your community, whether it is in the refugee community or the geographical communities that you found yourself in.
Who is the programme for?
This programme is for refugees living in Scotland who would like to build on their existing leadership skills, develop their resilience and become key leaders for their communities.
This programme is for you if:
- You are an Afghan community leader, having experienced the asylum system in Scotland, whether you are in the process of seeking asylum and/or have a protection status (refugee, resettlement, humanitarian protection, etc.).
- Have a level of English equivalent or above Upper Intermediate (SCQF Level5, ESOL LEVEL 2 OR CEF B2)
- You have previous leadership experience that you can demonstrate
- You are currently active and connected supporting your community
- You have the desire to take a leadership role in the community, supporting others and engaging with local stakeholders – contributing to the integration of Afghan communities in Scotland
- You think that the programme will help you develop leadership skills to support others to grow and thrive in their community and that it will help you engage more effectively with local stakeholders.
During the programme, you will:
- Develop understanding of your context and your role as community leader
- Identify your leadership tendencies and preferences and how this impacts your practice and collaboration with others
- Develop your confidence in adapting to varying situations and supporting others to thrive in your community
- Gain practical tools to support develop others

Develop skills and strategies for engaging effectively with your community and key local stakeholders.
Programme Details
Please note that all sessions will run from 10am-4pm sharp, but you are welcome to arrive at 9.30am for a hot drink and to get settled in.
Module 1 – 2 and 3 December
Module 2 – 8 and 9 January 2025
Module 3 – 29 and 30 January 2025
Where: Many studios, 3 Ross St, Glasgow G1 5AR
Cost: The programme is fully funded. Lunch and refreshments are included. If you need any support with transport, accommodation or childcare, please let us know on the application form. Please note that it is not guaranteed.
Qualification
The programme offers the opportunity to complete the Social Enterprise Academy Award in Leadership qualification. This is made up of 1x 10-credit SCQF level 9 units or 'micro-credentials'. A micro-credential is a fully accredited stand alone qualification used for professional development. The SEA Certificate in Leadership is credit rated by Glasgow Caledonian University.
Gaining the qualification is optional, and you will need will have to have attended 80% of the programme to complete it. You will need to operate in the right environment to be able to write the assessments. Some participants might not be able to gain the qualification.

AYESHAH KHAN - Ayeshah is passionate about community and works tirelessly to advocate for social justice. Having worked alongside SEA for a considerable period of time and in the third sector since 2002, Ayeshah is a champion for local peoples rights and a voice for those who are marginalised.
